Challenging Stereotypes through Genetic Evidence
When archaeologists first discovered the circular burial mound in the Apton Lovel area of southern England in the early 19th century, the initial impression was based on bone size and the prominence of the grave goods, leading them to conclude the deceased was a man. However, the use of advanced ancient DNA sequencing techniques within a large-scale genomic project revealed the hidden truth behind these bones, confirming that the individual was female, a fact entirely unforeseen by researchers who previously relied solely on traditional skeletal characteristics.
Tom Booth, senior researcher at the Francis Crick Institute, confirmed that he had to re-test two additional samples from the skeleton to verify the unexpected result, which came back identical both times, closing the door on any doubts regarding the sex of the deceased. Booth stated, "We are changing an understanding that has lasted two centuries regarding this skeleton, so we had to be cautious," highlighting the serious care the scientific team took with this shift in historical narrative.
Goldworking and Exceptional Social Status
The burial was extraordinarily rich in treasures, featuring axes with clear traces of gold on their edges, along with a luxurious gold necklace and finely crafted bone heads, clearly indicating the grave owner's profession in goldsmithing and metal shaping such as copper and bronze. Booth noted that these tools were buried with her in a special manner denoting exceptional status, adding, "No other burials compare to this grave in terms of the diversity and quality of the grave goods present," making it unique not just in Britain but across all of Europe.
Scientists attribute the deceased's height, approximately 163 centimeters, which was close to the average male height of that era, as one of the reasons that led to previous confusion in determining sex. Furthermore, her death at age forty-five, after menopause, led to changes in bone density and structure that make them resemble male bones, making determination based on physical measurements alone highly inaccurate and misleading.
This discovery reinforces the idea that women in ancient civilizations were not merely passive followers or wives of the elite, but were capable of acquiring power and prestigious status through their own professional means, contradicting the notion that they were unable to possess authority or high standing independently. Her work in metal shaping is believed to have been not just a craft, but a ritualistic and deeply cultural activity, linked to extensive European trade networks and the ritualistic lives of people.
The results of this pioneering scientific research are currently displayed in a new free exhibition at the Francis Crick Institute titled "We Go Way Back," aiming to provide a more accurate and less gender-biased image of human history. Led by population geneticist Pontus Skoglund, the research team hopes that the broader project to sequence the genomes of a hundred ancient individuals will contribute to developing our deep scientific understanding of human past complexities and social intricacies.
