Light Pollution During Sleep Threatens Heart Health

A recent study reveals that even low levels of light exposure during sleep can alter heart muscle structure and function, increasing long‑term risk of cardiovascular disease.

Lead researcher Dr. Lu Chee, professor at the Obesity Research Center, New Orleans, analyzed data from over 11,000 participants in the UK Biobank. Participants wore wrist‑mounted light sensors for a week, then underwent cardiac MRI three years later.
Results showed that individuals exposed to more than 3 lux at night developed thicker left‑ventricular walls, reducing chamber volume and impairing myocardial stretch. Similar adverse changes were observed in two other heart chambers.
Health context
Lux measures illumination; 1 lux is extremely dim, while 3 lux approximates moonlight or light leaking through a closed door. Experts recommend keeping bedroom light below 1 lux for optimal sleep.
Dr. Andrew Freeman noted that these alterations constitute “cardiac remodeling,” an undesirable process that can lead to heart enlargement or stiffening. Short sleep duration (under 5‑6 hours) may account for 24‑49% of the light‑related risk.
Nevertheless, Professor Karl Lawrence highlighted study limitations, such as the brief monitoring period and the wrist sensor’s indirect estimate of eye‑level light. Further research is needed to confirm causality.
Mitigating nighttime light is straightforward: install thick or blackout curtains on all windows to create a darker sleeping environment and protect heart health.
