Apple has unveiled its latest Mac Studio model, marking a significant milestone in professional computing. The new device is designed to be the core engine for complex tasks, powered by the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, which offer substantial leaps in performance and processing power.
The M5 Max chip represents a qualitative leap in processing capabilities, featuring an 18-core CPU and a GPU with up to 40 cores integrated with AI accelerators. These advanced technical specifications allow users to execute complex tasks at high speeds and support up to 128GB of unified memory, ensuring smooth operation even with the largest and most complex files.
The M5 Ultra chip represents the peak of performance in the Mac lineup, offering a CPU with up to 36 cores and a GPU with 80 cores. This chip integrates Neural Accelerators into the GPU for the first time, giving the device immense power to process large language models locally without relying on external cloud services.
Technical data indicates that AI performance in this device significantly outperforms previous generations, recording processing speeds up to 4.3 times faster compared to the M3 Ultra chip. Graphics units also see a major 1.8x improvement, enhancing the capabilities of applications relying on visual effects and realistic lighting in 3D work environments.
The new device relies on a massive unified memory technology reaching up to 512GB in the Ultra model, with a bandwidth of 1.2 terabytes per second. This huge capacity allows running large AI models directly on the device, supporting the processing of up to 33 streams of 8K video at 30 frames per second simultaneously without any interruption or performance lag.
To meet the needs of large projects, Apple allows linking multiple Mac Studio devices via Thunderbolt 5 and Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA). This connection creates a unified shared memory space, providing users with computing power equivalent to large servers, where a cluster of four devices can achieve AI inference performance three times faster than a single standalone device.
The device includes a wide range of modern connectivity options, notably six Thunderbolt 5 ports supporting data transfer speeds up to 120 gigabits per second. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for the first time via Apple's innovative N1 chip, ensuring stable and fast wireless connections, and supports running up to eight external displays simultaneously at high resolution.
The storage unit in the device is twice as fast as the previous generation by adopting an SSD architecture based on sixth-generation PCIe cards. This high data transfer speed directly contributes to accelerating the loading of large projects and language models, saving valuable time for editors and designers while working on massive and complex files.
The device runs on macOS 27 Golden Gate, which offers comprehensive improvements in user interface and network file transfer speeds. The system includes a new search engine for Finder, Photos, and Mail applications, along with visual updates based on the Liquid Glass design, enhancing the daily user experience and making device interaction smoother and clearer for creatives.
