The United States has imposed sanctions on Iranian cryptocurrency trading platforms, following an investigation by Reuters that uncovered an Iranian scheme to evade international sanctions.

Background

The US Department of the Treasury conducted an investigation into Iranian cryptocurrency trading platforms, particularly the "Shelbi" platform based in Dubai, which it accused of participating in a financial network that helped Iranian entities subject to sanctions transfer funds using cryptocurrencies.

The department confirmed that the "Shelbi" platform had conducted cryptocurrency transactions on behalf of the Central Bank of Iran, as well as other entities, and that some of its digital addresses had been linked by Israeli authorities to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

US Sanctions

The US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on the "Shelbi" platform and its founder, Siavash Kiyanpour, whom it accused of providing material support to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the "Nobitex" platform, Iran's largest cryptocurrency trading platform.

The department also imposed sanctions on the Iranian "Aban Tether" cryptocurrency trading platform, which it accused of conducting transactions worth millions of dollars on behalf of Iranian entities listed on sanctions lists.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Paiseant stated that the department will continue to pursue and dismantle unauthorized financial networks that support the Iranian regime, emphasizing that the United States will take action against entities that use digital assets to evade sanctions.

Context

These sanctions come as part of US efforts to pressure Iran and put an end to its military activities in the region.

The US had previously imposed sanctions on "Nobitex" in June, accusing it of helping the Iranian government evade Western sanctions.

This move is part of US efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, particularly with regard to Iranian activity.

It appears that these sanctions will affect Iran's ability to access funds through cryptocurrencies, making it more difficult for the Iranian regime to obtain the financial resources needed to fund its military activities.
