Tesla and Chinese Automakers Recall Millions Over Emergency Door Handles

China's electric vehicle sector is witnessing its largest recall in history, as the State Administration for Market Regulation imposes strict measures concerning the safety of electronic door handles.
Details of the Widespread Recall
Tesla leads the list of affected companies with a recall of nearly three million Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, alongside significant numbers of imported cars. This action also includes major Chinese automakers such as Geely, Leapmotor, BAIC, Chery, Dongfeng, FAW Hongqi, and Xpeng, as well as Xiaomi, which is recalling approximately 390,000 SU7 units.
The objective is to address concerns regarding flat electronic door handles that are difficult to operate during emergencies, particularly when power is lost after accidents. The involved companies have decided to install warning stickers on hidden emergency handles to facilitate access, while Tesla will release a software update causing windows to roll down automatically after severe crashes.
Regulatory Background and New Safety Standards
These decisions follow a tragic incident involving a Xiaomi SU7, where three university students died after failing to open the doors before the car caught fire. This recall aims to push manufacturers to provide immediate solutions, with new standards mandating effective external mechanical handles and clearer internal emergency handles, set to take effect in January 2027.
Owners of affected vehicles receive official notifications to obtain stickers for free from service centers, reflecting a radical shift in current safety standards within the smart car industry.
