Data from vessel‑tracking firm Kpler reveal a sharp decline in traffic through the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, with only five commercial ships passing on Saturday and none on Sunday.

Details of the drop

The latest figures contrast with the previous weekend, when around thirty vessels navigated the strait, and with the week before that, which saw 31 ships. The slowdown occurs amid ongoing U.S.–Iran tensions over the resumption of talks aimed at ending the regional conflict.

Oil prices moved within a narrow band; Brent crude rose 0.2 % to $88.72 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate slipped to $82.35. Both grades had posted gains of over 5 % last week after a series of attacks on tankers belonging to ADNOC and a refinery owned by Saudi Aramco.

Background and impact

Uncertainty about the restart of U.S.–Iran negotiations grew after Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghaji said Tehran had not yet decided to return to dialogue. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, urged Americans to accept a modest rise in gasoline prices as long as the conflict persists.

IG market analyst Tony Sikamor noted that the situation remains unchanged, with both sides holding firm, while markets balance the risk of tighter energy supplies against the possibility of using alternative, informal routes.

Future diplomatic moves or any military escalation will continue to shape maritime traffic and energy prices in the region.
