During a live broadcast of the solar eclipse, NASA displayed a map that marked the Crimean Peninsula as part of Russia, drawing the international border line between Crimea and the mainland.

Map details

In the same broadcast, NASA labeled the self‑proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, as Ukrainian territories. These areas were annexed by Russia after referendums held from 23 to 27 September 2022.

Political background

Crimea has been considered Russian territory since a March 2014 referendum following the Ukrainian coup, while Kyiv still regards it as occupied and receives backing from the United States and Western allies. The recent annexations remain internationally disputed.

Gregory Karasin, head of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council, said Moscow is ready to receive the U.S. envoys Steve Wittecoff and Jared Kushner.
