Israel's military announced on Sunday that it had killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike on southern Lebanon, warning it will resume attacks if threatened.

Operation details

The Israeli Air Force carried out two airstrikes on the towns of Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani, killing "Abu Hassan Alaa," a key figure in Hezbollah's Badr unit. Three Israeli soldiers were seriously wounded in prior clashes with the group.

Lebanon's Health Ministry reported 11 dead, including three children, and 19 injured. The casualties included an entire family from Ansar, hit when a command centre was targeted.

Political context

Prime Minister Joseph Aoun condemned the attacks as violations of the Framework Agreement and international law, noting they undermine U.S. efforts to implement the deal. Meanwhile, a U.S. State Department spokesperson said the experimental zones in Lebanon are the "only solution" for stability, blaming Hezbollah for the escalation.

The United States backs the so‑called "three‑party framework" and insists on clearing Lebanese areas of Hezbollah presence, with plans to expand the operation after confirming its success.

Israel's army posted on X that targeting "Abu Hassan Alaa" was a response to a Hezbollah operation against its forces, aiming to eliminate terrorist plots that included drone‑borne explosives.
