Economic anxieties dominate Iraq's political landscape as officials scramble to secure stable oil revenue amidst rising regional tensions.

Baghdad Seeks Security Guarantees

Iraqi Speaker of the House Haytham al-Alwani emphasized the need for special treatment for Iraqi oil exports during his meeting with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Baghdad.

Al-Alwani insisted that this distinct status must protect national economic interests, particularly as shipments pass through the vital Strait of Hormuz, which has seen fluctuating maritime activity recently.

Background on Regional Tensions

One-fifth of global oil production traverses the Strait of Hormuz. Although maritime activity has dipped since conflicts escalated in February, the passage remains a critical economic artery.

In response, Ghalibaf described the bilateral relations as robust, opening the door for negotiations to ensure uninterrupted exports without security hurdles that could harm both neighboring economies.
