Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated sharply as Iran announces substantial bounties for targeting US military personnel, coinciding with a historic low in commercial shipping traffic through the strategic waterway.

Bounties and Military Targeting

Amir Hatami, Commander of the Iranian Army, revealed a reward of $30,000 for anyone who kills or captures a US soldier and hands them over to Iranian authorities, marking a significant escalation. Hatami stated that the reward would double to $60,000 if the operation is carried out by a woman, citing numerous requests from volunteers eager to fund these initiatives.

Hatami asserted that the US presence has been practically removed from the region, claiming American forces no longer have permission to enter the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, or the Gulf of Oman. He did not specify a timeline for these operations, noting the absence of widespread US ground troops in Iranian territory since fighting began in February.

Stalled Diplomacy and Maritime Freeze

Ship tracking data indicates a severe drop in maritime traffic, with only five vessels crossing on Saturday and none on Sunday, compared to 31 ships the previous week. With talks between Iran and the US stalled, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that restoring navigation requires Washington to meet Tehran's demands, including war damage compensation.

Despite indirect communications via intermediaries, no diplomatic breakthroughs are imminent, while the US insists on maintaining an indefinite naval blockade on Iran, exacerbating a global shipping crisis reliant on the strait for roughly a fifth of the world's oil and LNG shipments.
