GrapheneOS has revealed its ambitious strategy to expand support to include Motorola devices, marking a qualitative shift away from total reliance on Google Pixel phones. This expansion aims to provide more diverse options for users interested in high digital security while maintaining the strict standards the platform is known for in protecting personal data. The platform aims to begin supporting Motorola's traditional flagship devices scheduled for release in 2027, before extending support later to include the foldable Razr Fold and Razr Ultra models. This support will involve providing seven years of continuous security updates, ensuring devices remain protected against emerging threats for an extended period. Supported devices will rely on the long-term support Linux 6.18 LTS kernel, with the possibility of transitioning to newer versions in the future to ensure continued advanced protection. Security features will also include advanced protection against unauthorized reset attacks, along with enhanced USB-C port security to prevent potential exploitation. The platform confirmed that its partnership with Motorola takes a purely technical form without direct financial funding, as the company will provide specialized engineers to assist the development team in porting and maintaining the system effectively. Both Motorola and Qualcomm will contribute to resolving driver and firmware issues, improving compatibility with advanced security technologies like Memory Tagging Extension. Users will be able to purchase regular Motorola devices from open markets, then unlock the bootloader and install the system themselves without needing pre-installed special versions. The platform also ensures broad network support, with the ability to force the activation of technologies such as 5G, VoLTE, VoNR, and VoWiFi even with operators whose official compatibility is not yet complete. This expansion is a strategic step that opens new horizons for users of foldable phones and flagship mobile devices, who are looking for integrated privacy solutions outside the traditional framework of currently popular smartphone platforms in the market.
