Deadly 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Kills 47 and Causes Widespread Destruction in Indonesia's Flores Island

Rescue teams continue relentless search efforts under the rubble on Indonesia's Flores Island following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on Saturday morning. The natural disaster has claimed at least 47 lives, with rescuers working to assess the full extent of human and material losses in remote areas.
Manggarai and parts of Sika suffered the most severe destruction, with initial data recording 24 deaths in Manggarai and 17 in East Manggarai, alongside fatalities in other regions. Over 150 homes sustained severe structural damage, while dozens of educational institutions, health facilities, and places of worship were destroyed, leaving many homeless overnight.
Visual footage from Maumere port, the regional capital, showed massive concrete blocks falling from the port station onto passengers, causing some to fall into the sea after the walkway to ships collapsed. Emmanuel Melkyades Laka Lena, Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, stated that most victims died in their sleep due to building collapses, while others were awakened by the force of the tremors.
The National Disaster Management Agency dispatched over 10,500 aid packages to the operations base, with work continuing despite access difficulties caused by landslides cutting off roads to isolated villages. An initial tsunami warning led to the evacuation of 2,000 people, but it was later lifted as no significant sea level rise was detected, though many fled to hills as a precaution.
Indonesia lies in the highly active tectonic "Ring of Fire," where three major plates converge, exposing it to frequent severe earthquakes and volcanoes. This disaster reminds the world of the recurrence of natural disasters in the archipelago, as full damage assessment continues in remote mountainous areas.
Authorities urge residents to remain calm and stay away from coastal areas and damaged buildings, given ongoing aftershocks that complicate rescue operations and exacerbate risks to the fragile infrastructure in the affected region.
