OpenAI has rolled out an update to ChatGPT allowing users to enable the 'Memories' feature within temporary chat sessions, offering a personalized experience while maintaining long-term data privacy.

Personalization Without Permanent Tracking

A new settings menu appears above the chat window, letting users choose between a standard non-personalized mode and a personalized mode that grants the AI access to saved memories, custom instructions, and connected plugins.

This selection must be made before starting the conversation and cannot be changed later, enabling users to benefit from personal context without creating new memories or saving a permanent log while the session remains temporary.

Technical Context

This feature aims to bridge the gap between absolute privacy and seamless interaction, as temporary chats previously isolated users from any prior context, whereas the new version allows read-only access with the option to manually save the session later to convert it into a regular chat subject to standard account settings.

The company confirms these chats may be retained for a month for safety purposes, with availability currently ranging across paid subscribers and some free users.
