Turkey Unveils Rare Inscription of Prophet Muhammad's Name in Ani Heritage Site

Heritage authorities in Turkey have announced a unique archaeological discovery within the historical site of Ani, uncovering an ornate stone bearing the name of the Prophet Muhammad repeated six times in ancient Kufic script.
Details of the Rare Artifact
Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy revealed that the discovered stone measures 51 centimeters in length and 21 centimeters in width, featuring raised inscriptions surrounding an eight-pointed star at the center. Although the other half of the piece has deteriorated over time, the remaining portion clearly shows the repetition of the sacred name within a caption band circling the central motif.
Experts believe this fragment was part of the architectural ensemble of a Seljuk tomb within the cemetery, serving as a tangible witness to the deep spiritual connection and religious devotion prevalent during that era of Islamic history in Anatolia.
Historical Context of Ani
The archaeological site of Ani in the eastern province of Kars is one of the most significant locations listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list, having hosted over 23 different civilizations throughout history, from the Scythians to the Seljuks. Known by various titles such as "City of the World" and "Cradle of Civilizations," the site houses ruins reflecting centuries of cultural and artistic diversity.
Researchers have been conducting excavation work in the Seljuk cemetery since 2021, aiming to uncover more buried secrets that document the relationship between Islamic Turkish heritage and local traditions, thereby enhancing the site's appeal as a major tourist and scientific destination for visitors worldwide.
