U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will soon declare the Strait of Hormuz as American territory, stating the move will follow what he termed "Iran's defeat".

Plan details

Speaking to a crowd in Nassau, New York, Trump said the administration will impose a blockade on the strategic waterway and that no ship will be allowed to pass without U.S. permission. He added that the declaration will require a permanent U.S. military presence in the area, despite earlier remarks that the conflict with Tehran would be short‑lived.

The proposal comes six months after the US‑Iran clash began, during which global oil stocks have dwindled as navigation through the strait halted. Tehran maintains it will not fully reopen the passage unless U.S. conditions are met, while Trump insists the strait will ultimately fall under American control.

Conflict background

The Hormuz Strait carries roughly 20 million barrels of oil daily from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other producers to world markets. Its closure or control exerts major pressure on energy prices, with gasoline reaching $4.07 per gallon on Friday, up from $3.85 a month earlier.

Trump also told reporters that higher fuel prices are an acceptable cost to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, pledging never to apologize for any military action against Tehran.

A recent CNN poll showed 74 % of Americans believe the war has not been worth the human and financial toll.
