Romania's Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday that an F‑18 fighter, operating under NATO air patrol duties, successfully shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that breached the country's airspace, highlighting rising aerial threats in the region.

Incident details

The combat aircraft, on a routine air‑guard mission over Romanian territory, engaged and destroyed the intruding drone using its onboard detection and weapon systems. The ministry confirmed there were no casualties or property damage.

The drone, whose origin remains unidentified, violated international norms by entering Romanian airspace, prompting heightened defensive measures.

Regional context

As a NATO member sharing a 614‑kilometre land border with Ukraine, Romania has experienced repeated aerial incursions over the past four years. Additionally, the Black Sea surrounding the country contains floating mines that threaten key commercial and energy routes.

This incident underscores growing security concerns in Eastern Europe, with NATO allies bolstering defensive capabilities to counter the surge of unmanned aerial threats.

The defense ministry affirmed continuous monitoring and reinforced cooperation with the alliance to safeguard Romania's sovereign airspace.
