The Perseverance rover has demonstrated its unique exploratory capabilities by discovering corundum, the mineral essential for forming rubies and sapphires on Earth, deep within the Martian landscape.

A Geochemical Puzzle at Jezero Crater

Ann Uliel, a geochemist from Los Alamos National Laboratory, led the team that detected grains of this rare mineral inside three rocks near the Jezero crater, where the mineral contains chromium, the element responsible for the deep red hue of rubies.

Scientists face a scientific enigma; corundum typically forms in environments rich in aluminum and poor in silicon, whereas the rocks where it was found are rich in plagioclase, which consumes aluminum, making its presence there geologically unexpected under traditional models.

Impact of an Ancient Collision

Researchers suggest that the most plausible explanation for this mystery lies in a violent collision that occurred eons ago, leading to the formation of the Jezero crater, where high temperatures, immense pressures, and hot fluids resulting from the impact drastically altered the chemical composition of the rocks.

This discovery represents a significant leap in understanding Mars' geological history, providing tangible evidence of the thermal and pressure processes the planetary crust experienced in the past, opening new avenues for studying the evolution of the Martian environment.
