The Russian tanker "Caroline Bisenghi," carrying roughly 800,000 barrels of oil, drifted off Qabala Island on June 30 and later reported difficulties off Yemen's coast before an apparent explosion on June 8. Satellite analyst John Amos confirmed the oil patch now covers over 2,000 km², expanding to nearly 600 km² by early August.

The affected area includes a marine protected reserve with the Al-Halani Islands, endangering endangered turtles, humpback whales, and coral reefs. Omani authorities announced the slick has reached the mainland and activated emergency response plans.

Legal and humanitarian hurdles

International war‑related sanctions label the incident a "war act," meaning compensation funds (IOPC) will not finance cleanup. The 25‑year‑old vessel lacks coverage from recognized Western insurers.

Insurance experts warn that without a proper response, the ship could break apart under relentless wind and waves, potentially releasing 40‑50 million gallons of oil.

The disaster unfolds amid heightened regional tensions involving Houthi forces, Iran, the United States and Israel, complicating rescue efforts. The region also suffers from limited marine rescue infrastructure, hindering rapid intervention.

Environmental NGOs such as Greenpeace monitor the spill, noting the slick grew from 45 km² in late July to 600 km² in early August, ranking it among the worst spills of the decade.
