North Korea today dismissed South Korean President Yoon Suk‑yeol's invitation to start talks aimed at ending the technical state of war that has persisted since the 1953 armistice, coinciding with celebrations of the 81st anniversary of liberation from Japanese rule.

Invitation and Response

During his Liberation Day address, Yoon proposed direct negotiations with Kim Yo‑jong to establish a comprehensive peace agreement, stressing Seoul's desire for peaceful coexistence with the North. Yonhap reported that the North Korean leader gave no reply, and state media in Pyongyang published no coverage of the proposal.

Conflict Background

Although active fighting ended in 1953, the two Koreas remain technically at war because no peace treaty has been signed. Seoul has renewed outreach since Yoon took office in June 2022, yet Kim has shown no willingness to engage in talks.

Meanwhile, a South Korean military source reported a fresh border incident, with South forces firing warning shots after North Korean troops crossed the demarcation line.
