Intensified Security in Ceuta: Responding to New Mass Crossing Attempt and Growing European Tensions

Moroccan authorities implemented decisive security measures on Saturday to thwart a large-scale attempt by irregular migrants to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. This operation aimed to prevent a human surge similar to the crisis witnessed two weeks prior, as authorities detected significant movements of large groups anticipating an opportunity to breach the narrow border strip, prompting the Moroccan police to adopt a proactive and public stance to maintain public order and prevent new humanitarian tragedies.

Field Security Measures and Intervention

Moroccan security forces, with direct support from the Moroccan Army, carried out extensive detention operations involving dozens of migrants intending to cross the dividing barrier, where more than one hundred individuals were detained in the vicinity of the city of Fnideq, historically known as Castillejos. Public forces relied on strong tactics including the deployment of riot police units and the use of tear gas to disperse gatherings formed on the hills near the border, following an observed increase in the number of crossing seekers primarily from Sub-Saharan African countries, necessitating a swift and firm security intervention.

In the same context, Madrid did not merely monitor the situation from afar but unprecedentedly reinforced its security presence by deploying over fifteen hundred elements of the Spanish police and army to fully secure the border sector. Reporters for the Spanish newspaper El Pais described the security situation as extremely strict and far exceeding what was prevalent in previous days, as the existing metal fence was reinforced with a newly installed floating barrier, in addition to the employment of fast naval vessels and drones to monitor any suspicious movement in the maritime and terrestrial areas.

Political Background and Tension within the European Union

This direct security escalation reflects deep tensions within the structure of the European Union, especially after the previous crisis, which resulted in the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants, caused a partial paralysis of trust between member states. Italy took the exceptional step of suspending the application of Schengen agreements with Spain, supported by countries such as Finland and Denmark, while Czech officials demanded the temporary suspension of Spain's membership within the European group, despite the Spanish Prime Minister's denial that Ceuta is practically subject to open area rules.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani affirmed that his country does not seek to engage in political disputes with Madrid, but rather contented itself with monitoring questionable population flows out of fear of repeating the catastrophic scenario in Ceuta. He indicated that the true source of danger lies in instability in Morocco, warning of the possibility of a new wave of arrivals, and stated, "We are not engaging in any kind of war against Spain, we are only carefully monitoring arrivals." He added, "Instead of worrying about us, Spain should worry about Morocco, for that is where the problems originate."
