Alarming Rise in Migrant Deaths Across the Mediterranean Despite Overall Decline in Flows in 2026

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency, has revealed an alarming increase in migrant deaths during their attempts to cross seas towards Europe. The number of casualties tripled on the Eastern Mediterranean route during the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Deaths on the Central Mediterranean route more than doubled, highlighting the extreme dangers migrants face despite a 46% drop in total arrivals to just 8,577 individuals.

Diverging Routes and New Migration Geographies

Data indicates that 1,065 deaths or missing persons were recorded on these dangerous routes in that short span. In contrast, the Atlantic route to Spain saw a sharp 78% decline in arrivals, totaling only 2,276 people. Conversely, crossings via the Western Mediterranean rose by 66% to 5,647, driven largely by a surge in land crossings through Ceuta and Melilla.

Border Crisis and Political Response

This western surge is primarily attributed to a threefold increase in land flows from Morocco to Spain, following the major crisis in Ceuta last July involving a massive, unprecedented influx of migrants. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that approximately 72,000 migrants crossed the border, noting that around 70,000 had already returned voluntarily after this exceptional event, which significantly impacted border policies.
