Iceland and Montenegro are making significant progress towards joining the European Union, with the EU planning to prepare a single accession treaty for both countries.

Background of Membership

This move comes after the August referendum in Iceland, which could accelerate the country's accession talks to the EU, given its membership in the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area.

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that Iceland will be able to join the EU within a year or two.

Mass Expansion

Montenegro is the most advanced candidate from the Western Balkans for EU membership, with the European Commission setting 2028 as a target date for the completion of accession talks.

Montenegrin Minister for European Affairs, Maida Gorcevic, expressed her country's happiness to join the EU simultaneously with Iceland.

This move is part of the EU's mass expansion, which has seen several countries join in the past.
