Egypt's Foreign Ministry issued a strongly worded statement condemning Israeli airstrikes that hit the Abu al-Duhur military airport in Idlib on Tuesday, calling the attacks a blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.

Details

Syrian military sources reported that Israeli jets carried out eight strikes on the airport runway, causing material damage to the infrastructure but no civilian casualties. Israel has not officially claimed responsibility.

Egypt warned that the raids represent a dangerous escalation that could undermine international efforts to support stability in Syria, emphasizing the need for political solutions and tension reduction.

Context

Abu al-Duhur, which had been out of service for years during the civil war, has recently attracted attention as part of a broader Syrian military reconstruction program. This comes amid reports of increased Israeli interest in Syria's air force capabilities.

U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack described the operation as "an unnecessary escalation" and urged parties to prioritize diplomatic dialogue.

Egypt called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and halt the policy of imposing realities by force, to prevent further cycles of escalation in the region.
