Satellite imagery analysis reveals that the detached section of the glacier near Mount Langtang Lirung was approximately 609 meters wide, triggering a massive wave of water, ice, and rocks. The debris fell about 2.1 kilometers down to the river below, creating thick clouds of dust and causing extensive destruction in the surrounding area.

The destructive wave swept through the first 22 kilometers of the riverbed at an average speed of 193 kilometers per hour, destroying the nearby border crossing, major bridges, and vital transport links in Nepal. The event was so violent that the United States Geological Survey initially recorded it as a 4.4 magnitude earthquake.
