The irregular migration crisis to the Spanish city of Ceuta has raised concerns within the European Union, as Juan Jesus Vivas, the city's governor, confirmed that around 100 people have lost their lives during the recent wave of migrants.

Humanitarian and Security Crisis

Vivas added, during a meeting of the European Parliament, that between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remain inside the city, indicating that Ceuta faces significant humanitarian and security pressures due to the massive influx of migrants.

Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the northern coast of Morocco, witnessed one of the largest waves of irregular migration to Europe last week, after tens of thousands of migrants crossed the border from Moroccan territory by land and sea within a few days.

Enhancing External Border Protection

Vivas urged the European Union to enhance the protection of its external borders and provide greater support to Spain in managing the crisis, while Magnus Brunner, the EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, pointed out that the bloc remains vulnerable if it relies on the cooperation or goodwill of a single neighboring country to monitor its external borders.

Brunner added, during a meeting of the European Parliament discussing the migrant influx on the borders of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, that one of the key lessons learned from this crisis is the need to strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries.

The European Commission confirmed that it did not find any evidence of what is described as "Russian disinformation" on Arabic-speaking social media platforms, considering this crisis a major challenge for the European Union regarding border security and relations with Morocco.
