A promotional campaign launched by the American sports prediction platform Novig has sparked widespread backlash among athletes after featuring American actress Sydney Sueni nude or semi‑nude with sports equipment, a portrayal many athletes deem disrespectful to women's sport.

Campaign details and criticism

The campaign posted a series of photos and videos on Instagram mid‑week, showing Sueni holding American footballs, a tennis racket, a baseball bat, and in other shots lying nude on a basketball. The Instagram Reels amassed 37 million views in four days.

Female athletes condemned the ad, arguing that its over‑sexualized focus harms the image of women's sport and negatively influences young girls aspiring to compete.

Voices from the sports community

Australian surfer Felicity Balmer told CNN the campaign is "extremely harmful" to athletes and girls, saying it represents a step backward for women's empowerment in sport. British runner Emma Hunt told BBC Sport that women in sport should be recognized for muscles, hard work, sweat, and dedication, not their bodies.

Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus, a four‑time Olympic medalist, posted on Instagram Stories that she could not stay silent about what she called "a blatant insult" to every woman who has devoted her life to sport. Swimmer Lani Balister, boxer Sky Nicholson, and gymnast Gracey Kramer also voiced strong objections, labeling the ad as an over‑sexualized reduction of women.

Background and previous controversies

Sueni is not new to controversy over semi‑nude advertising; in summer 2025 she appeared in an American Eagle campaign criticized for promoting eugenic‑sounding ideas about genetic superiority. The campaign featured her in semi‑naked poses, prompting similar outcry.

In response to the latest criticism, Sueni shared images from ESPN The Magazine's annual "Body Issue," a publication that has showcased athletes nude or semi‑nude since 2008, aiming to show that body portrayal does not diminish athletic achievement.

The debate continues over the boundaries of creative advertising in sport, with athletes increasingly urging brands to focus on performance, teamwork, and dedication rather than physical appearance.
