Syrian singer Asala, known as the “Icon of the East,” received an antique oud belonging to her late father, the late artist Mustafa Nasri, after a video of the instrument went viral on social media.

How the oud was returned

The Damascus shop, famous for traditional musical instruments, posted a clip showing the oud, crafted by artisan Tawfiq Al-Nahhat and estimated to be over a hundred years old. Once the shop confirmed the instrument’s original owner, the proprietor decided to hand it back to Asala shortly before her upcoming concert.

The shop owner asked his followers to share the video to speed up its delivery to Asala. The request sparked wide circulation online, enabling a personal handover of the oud to the singer on the evening of her scheduled performance in Damascus.

Event background

Asala is preparing for a major concert in Damascus on Thursday, September 17, and this moment serves as a tribute to her father’s musical legacy and a celebration of Syrian heritage. Syrian Artists Syndicate head Mazen Al-Natour commented: “Anyone who has Asala like this Asala should preserve it.”

The event highlights ongoing efforts to promote culture and the arts in Syria, underscoring the importance of preserving historic musical instruments.
