Apple has revealed the core motivation behind the wide iPhone Duo design, diverging from the trend of narrow foldable phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold and Pixel Fold.

Design Details

Molly Anderson, Apple’s senior design lead, explained that the goal was to emulate the feel of a traditional laptop. When closed, the device remains compact and portable; when opened, it offers a significantly larger display akin to a laptop screen.

Apple based the dimensions on the international paper‑size series A (A4, A5, A6), which preserve the same aspect ratio when folded in half, ensuring a balanced shape in both closed and open states.

Software and Transition Animation

Steve Lemay, vice‑president of UI design, said Apple wanted to avoid the sensation of switching to an entirely different device upon opening. The inner screen expands the familiar iPhone experience, while a custom animation makes the outer screen appear to stretch smoothly into the larger inner display.

This blend of hardware, animation, and software aims to deliver a unique folding experience that may inspire developers to create new apps and functionalities.

Broader Context

The move fits Apple’s broader effort to revitalize the foldable segment, showing a focus on a portable form factor that expands into a productive workspace, inspired by global paper‑size standards.

As developers explore the platform, new use‑cases are expected to emerge, further enriching daily usage of foldable devices.
