Al Hilal club issued an official statement on Sunday, filing a complaint with the Saudi Football Federation against certain Al-Taawoun supporters for chanting offensive slogans aimed at Portuguese player Robin Nevizz during their recent match.

Incident details

A video posted on X shows fans shouting the name of the late Portuguese player Diogo Jota, attempting to provoke Nevizz, who appeared angry upon hearing it. Jota, who died in a car accident in July 2025 at age 28, was a close friend of Nevizz and they played together at Wolverhampton Wanderers and for Portugal.

Al Hilal's response

The club stated that such behavior contradicts ethical and sporting values, emphasizing that competition does not justify personal attacks on players or their families. The complaint seeks to protect player rights and ensure a respectful sporting environment.

Context

The incident highlights rising tensions between fan bases in the Saudi league, where grief and respect are sometimes weaponized. Despite the video’s international spread, the Saudi Football Federation and Al-Taawoun have not yet commented.

Fans await the federation’s official response, expecting decisive measures to uphold proper conduct in stadiums.
