Abu Dhabi Records First Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting on Saadiyat Island

Abu Dhabi has achieved a new environmental milestone by recording the first confirmed nesting of a Loggerhead sea turtle on its shores, reflecting improved marine ecosystem health. This event underscores ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity.
Scientific Verification and Monitoring
Volunteers discovered the nest on Saadiyat Island during routine patrols, with species identification confirmed via DNA analysis in collaboration with Khalifa University. This marks the third sea turtle species nesting in the emirate, joining the Hawksbill and Green turtles.
The team monitored incubation closely using solar-powered cameras, intensifying surveillance as hatching approached. Forty hatchlings successfully reached the sea, achieving a 37% hatching success rate for this specific nest.
Global Significance and Conservation
Loggerhead turtles are listed as vulnerable, nesting in few global locations, making each confirmed nest vital for international conservation. Abu Dhabi's Environment Agency highlights this achievement as evidence of effective long-term environmental policies.
This milestone demonstrates the emirate's capacity to provide safe havens for wildlife despite climate change, enhancing scientific understanding of this rare species. Volunteer and expert efforts remain central to sustaining these ecological successes.
